Wellness Rituals: The 5 Habits That Keep Me Balanced
As a functional dietitian, busy mom, and business owner, I’ve learned that maintaining balance isn’t about doing it all—it's about finding small, meaningful rituals that help me stay grounded, energized, and in tune with myself. I’d love to share a few of these rituals with you in the hope that you find ways to stay grounded!
Starting the Day with Sun Exposure
I’m sure you’ve heard about the importance of a good night’s sleep, but did you know your day starts the night before? It begins with your circadian rhythm, that internal clock that dictates so much of your energy and mood. One of the easiest ways to keep it on track is by soaking up sunlight first thing in the morning.
Just a few minutes outside in the morning light helps my body wake up naturally, improves my focus, and sets me up for a good night’s sleep later. It’s a simple, peaceful way to start the day, and I can’t recommend it enough.
The Power of Cold Plunging
Cold plunging might sound intense, but it’s one of my favorite ways to increase energy and mood instantly. Whether it’s a cold shower or a quick dip in cold water, it’s like a jolt of energy that wakes me up from the inside out. The physical benefits are well-documented, with research showing that cold exposure can improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and even boost the immune system. But for me, the mental reset makes it truly invaluable. The science behind cold plunging also points to its role in increasing stress resiliency. Exposing your body to cold temperatures triggers a stress response—essentially a small, controlled dose of stress that trains your body to handle more significant stresses more effectively. It forces me to focus, breathe deeply, and embrace a bit of discomfort.
Movement: A Newer Rhythm in My Routine
Movement has become a consistent part of my life over the past couple of years, and I notice when I’m inconsistent. While I’ve grown to enjoy weightlifting, the key is finding something you genuinely like that makes you look forward to moving your body. Whether it’s yoga, running, or dancing around your living room, creating a rhythm that feels right for you is essential. When movement becomes something you enjoy, consistency follows naturally, and it doesn’t feel like a chore. But what if you’re stuck at a desk all day? That’s where exercise snacks come in—short bursts of movement that can be sprinkled throughout your day. Research shows that even brief periods of physical activity, like a quick walk, stretching, or bodyweight exercises, can boost energy, improve mood, and enhance focus.
Home-Cooked Meals: Prioritizing Quality and Creativity
Cooking at home has always been more than just a task for me—it’s about feeling good by prioritizing the quality of the food I eat. I’ve noticed that when I take the time to choose high-quality ingredients and put care into preparing my meals, I feel so much better overall.
It’s also an opportunity to get creative in the kitchen and make delicious dishes I enjoy. This practice isn’t about obligation; it’s about nourishing myself with food that supports my health and tastes delicious.
Supporting Hormones and Health with Simple Habits
I’ve learned that you don’t have to do everything to feel your best. It’s about finding small moments that truly support your body and connect you with your needs. Whether taking a few deep breaths, enjoying a nutrient-dense snack, or spending a few minutes in the sun, these small habits can significantly impact your hormones and overall health.
It’s not about adding more to your to-do list—it’s about weaving these simple, supportive actions into your day naturally and sustainably. Over time, these moments add up, helping you feel more connected, balanced, and in tune with your body’s needs.
